Best Celestron Telescope: NexStar vs the Classics

Celestron has been making telescopes since 1960, and their catalog spans everything from $80 tabletop refractors to $3,000 computerized Schmidt-Cassegrains. That range is exactly why "best Celestron telescope" is a question with about six different answers depending on who's asking. I've spent twenty years handing people telescopes at star parties, and I can tell you this: the best Celestron for a suburban dad with two kids is not the same scope that works for a retiree with a dark-sky cabin.

The Celestron NexStar 8SE is the best Celestron telescope for most people who want to actually see things, because the computerized mount does the hard work while the 8-inch aperture delivers views that keep you coming back. But it's not the right call for everyone, and some of Celestron's classic manual scopes are better values than anything with a hand controller attached.

The NexStar 8SE sits in a weird middle ground. It costs around $1,200, which is more than a manual 8-inch Dobsonian like the Sky-Watcher Classic 8 (about $550) but far less than Celestron's own EdgeHD 8 on an AVX mount (north of $2,000). The Sky-Watcher will show you the same moon craters and Saturn rings for half the price, but you'll spend twenty minutes finding each object instead of two. The EdgeHD gives you flatter star fields for astrophotography, but the mount alone weighs 40 pounds and the learning curve is steep enough to send most beginners back inside.

The 8SE's real competition is Celestron's own StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ, which runs about $400. That scope uses your phone's camera to figure out where it's pointing, then guides you to objects with arrows on the screen. It's clever, and it's a fraction of the price. But the 5-inch aperture on the DX 130 shows noticeably less than the 8SE's 8 inches. The Orion Nebula looks like a smudge through the 130; through the 8SE, you can see the trapezium stars and the wings of gas stretching out.

Design and setup

The NexStar 8SE's optical tube is a Schmidt-Cassegrain design, which means it folds 8 inches of aperture into a tube about 17 inches long and weighs just under 14 pounds. The fork arm and tripod bring the total to about 38 pounds. That's manageable for one trip if you're reasonably fit, and the whole thing fits in the back seat of a sedan. I've hauled mine to outreach events in a Honda Fit.

Setup is the part that catches people off guard. The tripod legs extend and lock with thumbscrews, the fork arm slides onto the mount head, and the optical tube locks into the fork with a single bolt. That's maybe 10 minutes the first time, 5 minutes once you've done it a few times. Then comes the alignment routine: you tell the hand controller the date, time, and your city, then point the scope at three bright stars. The GoTo system uses those to calculate where everything else is.

The alignment process is where beginners quit. The hand controller's menu system is dated, and the date format is American (month/day/year), which confuses everyone outside the US. You also have to level the tripod reasonably well and make sure the finder scope is aligned in daylight, or you'll spend your first night fighting the alignment routine instead of looking at Jupiter. I've watched a dozen people go through this, and the ones who succeed are the ones who read the manual once and accepted that the first night is a learning session, not a viewing session.

Once it's aligned, though, the NexStar earns its keep. Punch in "Saturn" and the mount slews, stops, and puts the planet in the eyepiece. One owner told me he found 40 objects in his first week, including the Ring Nebula and the Andromeda Galaxy, things he'd never have located on his own. That's the promise of the GoTo mount: it converts the hardest part of astronomy, finding things, into a solved problem.

Performance

The 8SE's optics are solid rather than extraordinary. Celestron's Schmidt-Cassegrains are mass-produced, and the quality control is decent but not perfect. I've looked through 8SEs that were sharp at 200x and one that had noticeable astigmatism at anything above 150x. The good news is that most units are fine, and the 8-inch aperture gives you enough resolution that you'll be able to see Cassini's division in Saturn's rings on a steady night.

The included eyepieces are the weak point. The 25mm Plossl is usable, but the 9mm is a cheap, narrow-field eyepiece that makes Jupiter look dim and mushy. Plan to replace them. A single 15mm or 18mm eyepiece in the $60-100 range will transform the views. I've also found that the stock finder scope is adequate but not great; the red dot finder that ships with the 8SE is fine for alignment, but a right-angle correct-image finder makes the whole experience less painful.

The mount is where the 8SE gets mixed reviews. The single fork arm is stable enough at low and medium power, but it vibrates for two or three seconds after you touch the focus knob at 200x. That's a known complaint, and it's the reason some people step up to the dual-arm NexStar Evolution. But for visual observing at reasonable magnifications, the 8SE's mount is fine. It's not a photography platform, and Celestron doesn't pretend it is.

Battery life is the other recurring complaint. The 8SE runs on 8 AA batteries, and owners report getting 2-3 nights of observing before the mount starts slewing sluggishly. The hand controller's low-battery warning is easy to miss. Buy the Celestron AC adapter (about $30) or a rechargeable 12V pack, and you'll never think about it again.

Durability

Celestron has been making the 8SE for over a decade, and the design is mature. The optical tube is aluminum, the fork arm is die-cast, and the tripod is stainless steel. The electronics are the weak point: the hand controller's buttons feel cheap, and the connector cable that runs from the mount to the hand controller is a known failure point. Owners report it wearing out after a year or two of regular use. The replacement cable is about $15 and takes five minutes to install.

The tripod is the same one Celestron has used for years, and it's adequate but not great. The leg locks are plastic and the tray is flimsy. It's stable enough on flat ground, but I've had mine wobble on uneven grass at star parties. If you're going to use it on soft ground, bring a small level and some patience.

Value

At $1,200, the NexStar 8SE is not a cheap telescope. But it's also not priced badly for what you get. A comparable 8-inch GoTo from Sky-Watcher runs about $1,000, and the 8SE's build quality is a step above. The real value question is whether you need the GoTo at all. If you're willing to learn the sky, a manual 8-inch Dobsonian for $500 will show you everything the 8SE can, just slower. The GoTo is worth the extra money if you have limited time, limited patience, or a light-polluted backyard where finding objects by star-hopping is genuinely difficult.

The used market is also worth checking. The 8SE has been in production since 2006, and there are plenty of gently used units on Cloudy Nights and Craigslist for $700-900. I bought my own 8SE used for $750, and it's been running for three years without issue.

Should you buy it?

If you have $1,200 to spend and you want to see Saturn's rings, the Orion Nebula, and a hundred other objects without learning the sky first, the NexStar 8SE is the best Celestron for you. If you're on a tighter budget, or if you think you'll enjoy learning to find things on your own, save the money and get a manual Dobsonian. You'll learn more, and you'll spend less.

What I'm testing next

I've got a Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ on my bench right now, along with a used NexStar 4SE that a reader sent in for a second opinion. The StarSense's phone-based alignment is an interesting idea, and I want to see if it holds up on a cold night when my phone battery is at 20%. I'll update this review with my findings in the next few weeks.
