Telescope Buying Mistakes: The Bird Killer Problem

The MEEZAA 90mm sits in an interesting spot. It's about $40 to $60 more than the Celticbird 80mm kit I reviewed last month, and that money buys you two things: a bigger aperture and a much better tripod. The Celticbird's optics are surprisingly good for the price point, but the tripod is where it cuts corners. The MEEZAA's stainless steel tripod is noticeably sturdier, the kind of foundation that doesn't make you nervous when you bump the focuser at 100x. The tradeoff is the phone adapter. Both scopes include one, and both have the same problem: the weight of your phone tips the balance, and just touching the focus knob causes the telescope to wobble slightly. Design and Build Quality
The first thing I noticed unboxing the MEEZAA 90mm was the weight. This isn't one of those featherweight scopes that feels like it'll blow over in a stiff breeze. Assembly took me about 20 minutes, and the instructions were clear enough that I'd trust a complete beginner to manage it.

Jupiter at 45x showed the four Galilean moons as bright pinpricks, and the equatorial bands were visible with a little patience. I pushed it to 90x with the 9mm eyepiece, and the image held together. No chromatic aberration to speak of, at least not visually. It shows up in photos more than through the eyepiece.
One reviewer saw a ring around Saturn with the 9mm eyepiece. That's the moment that hooks people, and it's worth emphasizing: you don't need a $500 scope to see Saturn's ring. If you're an experienced observer looking for a grab-and-go scope, it's also worth a look. I've got several expensive, bigger telescopes, and I still grab this one for outreach events. The public yearns to look through an eyepiece, and this scope delivers the goods without the setup hassle.
